Chocolatada Navidad | Aguano Muyuna | San Martin – Peru | 2022

Dear reader,

In November 2022 we visited  Aguano Muyuna, a small but cute village on the banks of Rio Huallaga not far from Chazuta, with a group of people from Chazuta who are committed to waste processing in the area. The name of the group is Chazuta Chuya Chuya.  This group has been committed to a clean and orderly Chazuta for years.

The people in Aguano Muyuna live from fishing and agriculture. The people live day by day.
We talked to the Mayor of the village and her residents about the waste topic.

 | Amagreenzone wants to support projects of this group in the near future. When it’s time for that, you can read it on this website.
That day, Karin got into a conversation with Carolina, a lady from the village who runs a bakery. Carolina told Karin it is tradition in Peru that someone organizes a party for the children with Christmas. However, there had not yet been people who wanted to organize this party for the children in Agunao Muyuna this year. The chocolatada includes chocolate milk with cake and a gift in the form of toys or educational items.
Karin and I talked to each other about this subject, and we decided to organize the chocolatada this year for the children of Aguano Muyuna.

For us, it was a logical decision to organize the Chocolatada. We are neighbors off Aguano Muyuna and even a part of it. We think it is important that neighbors help each other. It’s also an excellent opportunity for us to get to know the people of Agunao Muyuna.

Soon we made an appointment with Carolina for the next week to have a meeting and to see what is needed for that day.
In the days after, we spoke to some friends from Chazuta about our plan, and they immediately became enthusiastic. We asked if they wanted to help with the organizations, and they loved to do that. So, the team was formed and looks like this:
Hans & Rosaluz
Annie & Javiér
Melvin & Karin

Soon it was the day of our appointment, and we were on our way to Carolina.

To reach Aguano Muyuna, Rio Huallaga must be crossed in a canoe. Hans and Rosaluz came from Tarapoto and came a few minutes later. Javier had to work and couldn’t come.

When we walked up the stairs. Carolina already approached us and her welcome was warm.
A few minutes later, Hans and Rosaluz arrived, and the meeting could begin.

There was a lot to discuss. What ingredients are needed, division of tasks for that day, cost calculation and so on. There were already great idea’s on the table to organize an unforgettable day for the 300 children of Aguano Muyuna.
Annie speaks Spanish and good English and made the minutes of what was discussed.
Meanwhile, Carolina served a delicious drink made from Yucca. It was the first time we tasted it, and we liked it very much.

On the 24th of December, we’ll get help from 12 mothers of Aguano Muyuna. They’ll cook the chocolate milk and make sure that everything goes well during the day.

After an hour or so, Carolina gave us a tour of her bakery. She showed us the huge pans where the chocolate milk will be cooked in. She also bakes lovely bread and pastries.

Chocolate milk is made differently than what we are used to in Peru. We mostly scoop ready-made chocolate powder into a cup, pour hot water on it, and we can start drinking. The mothers of Aguano Muyuna cook their chocolate milk with organic cacao, cane sugar, some secret herbs and evaporated milk.
We have already tasted it, and it’s very tasty.

After the meeting, we thanked Carolina and said goodbyer. We walked into the village, where it was busy. The people of the village were preparing a party. We shook some hands and talked with the residents of Aguano Muyuna. We also met the recently elected new Mayor and had a chat with Lisandro, the current Mayor.
Then we left to Chazuta again.

Now the homework started! We created a text with photo’s to send to friends and family, to tell them about the event, and to ask for donations. Hans and Rosaluz and Javier and Annie did the same.
This was the text for the people in Europe:

 Hello dear friends and family,

Next December 24, together with four friends from Chazuta, we are going to provide a “chocolate Christmas party” for children (Chocolatada Navidad) in Aguano Muyuna. The village is located opposite our land, so our land is part of Aguano Muyuna. They are, so to speak, our neighbors across the street.

Normally someone takes charge of organizing this party, however, this year there was no one willing to organize it. Without much thought, we took on this task for this year.

The intention is that we will serve chocolate milk and cake to the 300 children of Aguano Muyuna. In the process, each child will also receive a toy.

Families living in Aguano Muyuna are poor and live from fishing and farming. This celebration means a huge amount to the children.

About 12 mothers from Aguano Muyuna are going to make the chocolate milk and manage everything that day. Of course, our dear friends, and we also help out.

To give 300 children the day of the year, we need quite a lot. So one of the mothers helped us make a list of supplies. Among other things, we need the ingredients for chocolate milk and cake, plus 300 toys.

We would like to ask you for a small contribution to start making the party possible for the children. If you can spare something, it will make many children happy. It really doesn’t have to be much, every little bit helps. If you cannot miss anything at the moment, then we understand that very well.

You can just donate through our Dutch bank account, we will then ensure that it comes to Peru and will be well spent.

On behalf of us, Karin & Melvin, Hans & Rosaluz and Annie & Javier and of course all the children of Aguano Muyuna,

Thank you very much!

Despite life being very expensive in Europe at the moment, donations quickly came in, which is fantastic. We’re thankful that people in Europe had some money to spare to give the 300 children an unforgettable day. We know that they themselves are struggling to make ends mean. Therefore, we’re very grateful to the donors for their generous gifts. People from Peru (friends from Hans and Rosaluz and Annie and Javier) also donated generously.

Soon we made a group in a messenger, so we could communicate directly. Annie sent the notes she made to the group.

After a few days, we collected enough money to be able to organize the day. With the donations coming later, we will do extra things for the children.
Here is the list with the donors:

In the meanwhile, we received offers from friends who want to help that day:

Anthony and Karen and others will do some entertainment for the children like, a music contest with Christmas songs, dancing and balloon games. Thank you so much, friends. We love your help!

Let’s make this day an unforgettable day for the Children of Aguano Muyuna

In the meanwhile we had a meeting together to coordinate. Who is going to do what? Where do we buy the ingredients, and the other things needed?
Annie has already asked around to shopkeepers in Chazuta for the prices of ingredients and found a shopkeeper who was willing to give a discount. Annie did a great job!

Our friends from Nina Chocolate in Chazuta (Oliver, Luz and Liam) are donating the organic cacao for the chocolate milk for the 300 children of Aguano. We are very grateful for this generous gesture.
Nina Chocolate uses only single origin cacao from Chazuta, a region at the edge of the Amazon within San Martín, Peru, an area world-famous for its consistently high quality cacao. Fundo Qoya, their farm in Chazuta, and other farms in the region, provide them with high quality, naturally grown, fine flavor cacao.

| Did you know Nina Chocolate ships high quality cacao all over the world?

Hans and Rosaluz will visit Tarapoto to ask stores about prices for (educational) toys. Annie and Javier are going to order the ingredients for the chocolate milk, Karin and Melvin contacted their Belgian baker in Tarapoto for cake, and he is willing to bake them. That’s amazing! Bruno is going to bake 300 pieces of one-person cakes. These are the cakes:

If you like, you’re welcome to visit Bruno’s Facebook page. He honestly bakes the best bread in Tarapoto and surroundings. Just click on the photo below, or click on the link under the photo:

Next week, we will visit Tarapoto to arrange other things. Today, it is 8 December 2022, so we have 16 days left to arrange everything. We have enough time to create a fabulous day for the 300 kids of Aguano Muyuna.

Especially for you, we’ll be visualizing this day through photos and videos. We’ll also keep this blog updated and inform you as soon as there are new developments. So, keep a close eye on this site.

Hans and Rosaluz have been in Tarapoto looking for educational toys for the children. There are beautiful educational children’s books here with which the children can learn to read, write and do math but on a playfull manner.
But it can also be, for example, an instrument like a flute or something else to make music. Or maybe we can find some marbles, it’s one of the favorite games of the Childern here.

We let you know when there is a deal!

——————————————————-

Friends from Tarapoto offered us to do activities with the Childern.
They will organize a musical contest for the Childeren in Christmas style. Also they will do other games with the childern like a dancing contest and balloon games. Probably there will be many more games. The offer to go do this with the kids, we don’t turn down, of course. Activities we had not yet discussed. It is therefore a miracle that we suddenly receive this message. We are very happy and the children are going to love it, we are sure about that.

With baker Bruno from Tarapoto is now the order for 300 pieces of cake. Bruno has indicated to deliver the cakes at cost price. That’s really great and we love this beautiful gesture. It takes quit some time to coordinate everything and to bake the cakes and arrange to deliver them. So much respect for that Bruno. December 23 the delivery will come to Aguano Muyuna.

Yesterday Karin and Melvin went to Tarapoto to look for supplies for the chocolatada. Our goal was to find drinking cups for the chocolate milk and napkins. It soon became apparent that we were not the only ones organizing a chocolatada. In several stores all the drinking cups turned out to be sold out. The vendors laughingly told us that we were too late. They referred us to other stores and eventually we found a store that still had plenty in stock. We made a nice price of 95 soles for 350 cups. We opted for paper cups so there would not be so much plastic waste left behind.

Slowly but surely now we are gathering all the stuff together and we are definitely going to get it in order before December 24.
Soon there will be another meeting with the organization and we will see what still needs to be arranged and who will do what. We are all excited and incredibly looking forward to this day.
Keep an eye on this blog for more updates.

Greetings Team Chocolatada Aguano Muyuna 2022

Hans and Rosaluz went to Tarapoto and they managed to buy toys, but not everything yet. It turns out to be fun toys for the childern. The team is very happy about this. Next week we will have to go to Tarapoto for another day to buy the rest of the toys. Well done Hans and Rosaluz!

This morning we had a video call with Anthony and Karen to discuss the activities. They have come up with very nice activities for the children in consultation with Carolina. We will do the following activities with the children:
– Sack race
– Building pyramids with cups
– Complete a course with a spoon in your mouth with an egg on it
And there will be dancing with the children. Karen is going to come up with a choreography and come up with the accompanying music. Then the children will dance to this.

Ourselfs really love the ideas. We need some small items for this. Such as: eggs, balloons, spoons, bags, music system with microphone, prizes for the games, cups and some other small items. We will arrange this for them.

Carolina has indicated that she wants to make lunch for the team. We will ensure that the ingredients are present. Very sweet of Carolina
We are busy arranging everything these days, but we feel joyful. Everything is going smoothly and we will have everything arranged for next Saturday.
We will continue to post in this blog, so stay tuned!

Dear readers of this blog.
We have wonderful news!!!
A few days back we spoke to a very important man. A man who is incredibly busy at this time. He thought the chocolatada in Aguano Muyuna was a very nice event and he has promised us to make some time in his busy scedule and prommised us to be present on December 24.

Meet Santa Claus

Our friend Carl, who love to be Santa Claus, offered us to come and that immediately added a extra dimension to the project.

| We arranged the real Santa Claus🎅🎄

We were visiting our dear friends in Shapaja to attend a chocolatada a few days back. It was a party organized for 30 children and it was a very nice afternoon. The children visibly enjoyed themselves. Games were played, wonderful gifts were handed out and chocolate milk and panattone were eagerly consumed by those in attendance. Some people came to make live music also. It was a great opportunity for us to see how such a day works. We can tell you, it was very busy with 30 children and their families. We tried to imagine how this day will go with 300 children and their families. We are sure that it will be a celebration that the children will not soon forget.
Some leftover presents we get present for the children of Aguano. That really sweet of our friends

——————————————————-

Yesterday Hans and Melvin went to Tarapoto to buy the rest of the toys.
On the street a gentleman walked by with drums and we asked the gentleman what they cost.
The drums were over budget so we had to leave the gentleman without doing business with him, but we were sure we were going to find even nicer gifts.

Hans and Rosaluz have done a lot of work to buy the presents. This has not been easy. They had to take into account the ages, the ratio of boys and girls and keep records of what exactly had been bought.

Soon we found nice presents in the shop and Hans and Melvin started to feel a bit like children again. The selected presents were well wrapped for transport. The people in the store were friendly and helpful.

We also found the balloons needed for the activities. We picked the Christmas colours.

Because time goes very fast, we are busy these days with the final preparations. Karin is busy making a schedule for the big day and writing down points that we still need to think about. Tonight the team will meet again to discuss what still needs to be bought, what needs to be arranged and how we will plan things for that day. Also we have to sort the presents for the ages.

In the context of transparency for our donors, we will now show the invoices of the purchased toys.

The total amount of the toys is:

Euro 323,61
Soles 1319,58

Dear Readers,

Yesterday we had a meeting with the team at Hans and Rosaluz’s house. It was a nice evening and a teammember had gotten delicious cake for everyone and it tasted great.
Hans and Rosaluz served a delicious banana with chocolate sauce from Nina chocolate. It seems like we are living in heaven in Chazuta.
The presents were all picked and sorted by ages and boys and girls and that was quite a job. But with 14 hands, it was quite manageable.

After picking out the gifts, we went over everything again.

Annie will buy the ingredients for the chocolate milk tomorrow and we will bring these ingredients to Aguano on Friday.
We will ask the volunteers for Christmas decorations and they can then bring them back when the day is over.
Handing out the presents will be done by the team with the help of mothers from Aguano. The mothers know exactly who lives in the village, and who does not. In Chazuta the children have already had a chocolatada but the children in Aguano not yet.
Hilder will look for a music system to play music and make speeches.
Anthony and Karen will contact Carolina to discuss times.

Now we just need to purchase some small items and then we will be ready for the big day. The team is excited for this day but it is also quite exciting. But we are sure it is going to be a day the children will not soon forget.

Stay tuned for more information to come 🙂

Dear donors, organization, volunteers, friends, family and interested parties.
It was an incredibly beautiful day yesterday. All the hard work, arranging, communicating with people and organizing came to a peak yesterday.

The children of Aguano Muyuna had a fantastic day yesterday. They visibly loved every minute of it. It was a big party where the children played games, learned about nature and could let their creativity run wild.

The activities organized by Anthony and Karen were a huge success!
These much appreciated and dear friends from Tarapoto entertained the children from their hearts. It was great to see how the children anticipated with the activities and enjoyed everything very much.

Anthony and Karen had made a script and thought everything out down to the last detail. We are also deeply impressed by this!
A special thank you to Anthony who accompanied everything with the microphone.
Karen devoted herself 200% to the children’s activities and the children visibly loved her. Fantastic!

The people not mentioned above will be mentioned later in this blog!

Our wonderful friends from Shapaja and Tarapoto , Darko & Hilno, Liliana & José, Karl and Milagros entertained the children in a fantastic way, and again straight from the heart. We were moved by it. We have great respect for these friends who have selflessly committed themselves to the children.
We are still impressed by their commitment to the children and without their help and activities with the children, this day had never been such a great success. Thank you so much.

A special thanks to Karl who was the real life Santa Claus that day and made the children go into extase. Many pictures where taken with Santa Claus, the children loved him so much. So nice to see. Thank you Karl, you´re a great man with a great heart!

| How beautiful the world would be if everyone were so devoted to others. This day has proven that once again.
Nina Chocolate supplied the best organic cacao in Peru, and you could taste it. The chocolate milk made from Nina’s chocolate seemed to come straight from heaven. The divine taste delighted everyone. We are very grateful to our friends from Nina Chocolate for making this day possible. Thank you so much!

(Panaderia) Bruno, the baker from Tarapoto did a really great job! Everybody loved the chocolatechip bread he made, we heared so much compliments.
Bruno told us it was a huge job for him to bake the 300 pieces of bread and worked very hard to deliver in time. We have a huge amount of respect that Bruno pulled this off. Thanks a million dear friend! Your amazing!

A special thank you to Lellay from Las Flores Hospedaje in Chazuta. Lellay also donated and we are impressed by this. Lellay prepared Christmas dinner for the team in the evening and we had a delicious meal. It was a very pleasant evening and we talked a lot about this fantastic day. Thank you so much Lellay!

Our great appreciation goes to Carolina. Carolina has done a lot of work to make this day possible. Weeks before the big day, we regularly communicated with Carolina. It would never have been such a beautiful day without Carolina’s help, advice and guidance. Carolina has therefore rightfully been part of the organizing team. Thank you very much for your hospitality, kindness and commitment. We really appreciate it. You are a great person!

We were pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Milagros Garcia. A fantastic teacher from Moralis, Tarapoto who entertained the children together with Hilno by singing beautiful songs and together they completely unleashed the creativity in the children. Under the guidance of Milagros and Hilno, true works of art came out off the fingers of the children. We are impressed by this creativity that the children showed us and we thank these fantastic ladies from the bottom of our hearts for their great effort. We are deeply moved by it. Thank you so much!

We also thank our neighbor Assi who committed to the day and entertained the children in a funny way. Assi brought order and moved everything in the right direction. Thank you dear new friend and neighbor.

The last people we would forget to thank, are the 12 mothers of Aquano Muyuna. Together with Carolina, they have worked hard to make this an unforgettable day for the children. Very early in the morning the mothers started cooking the chocolate milk and the result was delicious. Dear mothers of Aguano Muyuna, thank you very much for your efforts. We will never forget this.

Our deepest appreciation goes to our friends from Tarapoto, Sidney and Alex who turned up unexpectedly in Agunao Muyuna and helped make it a fantastic day for the kids. We were very pleased by your arrival. Really amazing. Thank you very much for that! We love you.

We would also like to thank our friend Luis Alejandro from Tarpoto. Luis helped to translate this blog into the Spanish language so that it is understandable for our Spanish readers. This was fantastic help for us because we are not yet fluent in Spanish. Thank you dear friend for your help. You are great!

We would also like to thank Alina for bringing us a sound system at the very last minute. It was great that you did this for the children. Unfortunately, the connections did not work, but that does not alter the fact that we are very grateful. Thank you very much for your help!

Also a special thank you to José who drove our friends from Shapaja and Tarapoto to Aquano Muyuna and helped make the day unforgettable for the kids. Thank you very much Jose.

We would also like to thank Karen’s uncle, Rider Sandoval Herrera. He arranged another speaker with a friend of his so that we could provide music for the event at the very last minute. We thank you very much!

Some Volunteers who had promised to come were unfortunately unable to attend due to circumstances. We would also like to thank these people very much for offering help. We think it’s great that you also wanted to work for the children. Thank you!

We would also like to thank Angel Varas from Chazuta for lending us a cable to connect the microphone. We thank you very much!

And finally we thank Hilder from Caliz Hostel in Chazuta for trying to find us a sound system. You are a very good friend! Thank you!

We, Karin and Melvin would like to thank the organizing team members. You were immediately enthusiastic when we asked you to organize the chocolatada in Agunao Muyuna with us. We are forever grateful to you, Hans y Rosaluz, Annie y Javiér. We couldn’t have done it without your help and input. We also got to know you better and we have closed you in our hearts forever. We are grateful that you have appeared in our lives!
Together with everyone else we organized a day that will never be forgotten.
We love you!

Report of the big day, December 24, 2022

We woke up early in the morning and we were actually quite nervous. Some things had to be arranged such as cables for the speaker, the speaker itself and some other small things. All things also had to be collected and packed, and Karin took on that task. Without Karin, Melvin would have lost everything…that’s why we are such a good team together.

Darko and Hilno, Liliana and José had given us leftover presents from the chocolatada they organized in Shapaja for the children of Aguano that we would use as prizes for the winners of the games. That’s a very sweet gesture. In the morning we packed the remaining prizes for the children.

At 10 o’clock in the morning Anthony and Karin arrived in Chazuta and Melvin picked them up at the collectivo. Then we drove to our house and there we drank papaya juice and Anthony and Karen had to put the last things in order for the activities.

Unfortunately, our friend from the Netherlands, Ilonka, could not come because she fell ill. Fortunately, things are going a lot better now. We were sorry that you couldn’t be there.

Our friends from Shapaja would arrive at the port to Agunao Muyuna at 11:30 AM, so at 11:00 AM we left Chazuta for Aguano Muyuna. We all arrived at the same time.
It is always nice to see each other and to give each other a big hug.

All the stuff was carried down the stairs to the banks of Rio Huallaga and the boat was filled with stuff and people. The area is breathtakingly beautiful and the short boat trip is therefore very special. Alina’s uncle, Hilmer, was running the boat that day and was very helpful with the loading.

Before the boat had arrived on the other side of the river, Carolina was already walking towards us with a group of people who helped to bring all the stuff back up. From the beach we immediately saw huge pans with the chocolate milk.

Carolina immediately showed us the chocolate milk and it looked great. Soon the decoration of the location was started. Balloons were blown up, Christmas garlands and ornaments were hung. Not much later everything was decorated.

It was a very hot day. The sun was bright in the sky with a few clouds here and there. Soon children came to see what was being done and the children could immediately make paintings under the guidance of Hilno and Milagros. It was fantastic to see how the children expressed their creativity and there were works of art that can be hung in the museum. Really very beautiful.

Elliot soon found a distant relative with whom he enjoyed himself very much.

Not much later, Alina arrives with the speaker and soon a large group of men was involved. Unfortunately they couldn’t get the speaker to work, but Karen’s uncle came up with the solution. He brought another speaker that could play music via bluetooth. We could now play music and talk through the microphone.

When the time came, Darko, Hilno, Liliana, Karl and Karen went to change.
They brought very nice Christmas clothes and then the activities on the field could begin.

There was laughter, dancing, a polonaise and all the children had their picture taken with Santa Claus. All works of art were exhibited and it was really beautiful to see.
Because it was so hot, not all children were present yet, but they would be present when the chocolate milk was served.

Then the games started.
Karen and Anthony did a great job. First there was dancing, then the sack race started and it was great fun.
After that two children were allowed to invite their mothers. The mothers were allowed to sit on a chair and a few meters away was a chair with pegs on it. The kids raced. The intention was that every time she took a peg and put it in the hair of the mothers. Whoever put the most pegs in her mother’s hair was the winner. It was very nice to see. Karin handed out the prizes to the winners of the games. Then participating children had to put a spoon in their mouth with a fresh egg on it. Whoever crossed the finish line first was the winner. The children had great fun with the games and also the adults.

After all prizes were awarded and the games were finished, everything was prepared to serve the chocolate milk and hand out the delicious chocolatechip bread. Not much later everybody was ready and the children lined up to receive their sweet goods.
Of course we also drank chocolate milk and ate a sandwich. It was very delicious.

It was really great to see how the children enjoyed all these delicacies. There was chocolate milk and bread in abundance, so if the children wanted to come again, they could.

Following serving the sweets, it was time to hand out the presents. Karin, Hans, Annie and Rosaluz were concerned with this because they knew exactly which presents were distributed to which age category.
Assi, Hans and Rosaluz formed rows of children divided by age and Assi did that very nicely. Then the distribution could begin.

It was great to see how happy the children were with the presents. One by one the presents were handed over and the children were very happy.

Some children were handed out a present, but still wanted a different one. That was no problem and all the children were very happy afterwards. Everywhere the children started playing with their toys and the joy and cheerfulness radiated from them.

Slowly the children went home satisfied and we were left tired but very happy. It was a wonderful day and it was a huge success. All the hard work in the weeks leading up to the chocolatada paid off on this day.
We are very happy with the result achieved. Give the children of Aguano Muyuna the day of the year. Our mission has thus been amply achieved.

Memory:
Beautiful shots were made throughout the day.
A film will be made of this day so that the donors, volunteers and everyone who contributed can see or relive this day. It will take several days for this film to be made. So keep an eye on this blog in the coming days.
The team will at least give you a heads up!
We also will show you the cost calculation with all income and expenses. It will be posted here in the coming days

Everybody who worked with us wish everyone a fantastic new year and thanks to everyone!

As we promised, we will now show you all invoices. In the end we appear to have 3 soles left and we will donate these 3 soles to a good cause.
Not all toys have been handed out. We have some left. Soon there will be a holiday called the 3 Kings. We will then organize something for children and distribute the remaining toys
That was it. Thanks again to all the donors who made this possible. You guys are awesome!
