Meeting around the new waste processing center of Chazuta

 Chazuta, 25 March 2024

On this beautiful Monday morning at 09:00am, a meeting is scheduled at Chazuta town hall to discuss the progress around the new waste segregation centre in Chazuta. Attendees include members of the muncipalidad, members of the ecologic volunteer group Chazuta Chuya Chuya, engineers  and two NGO’S (Cima Gordillera Azul and us from Amagreenzone). We are thinking along and want to invest in this special and much-needed project.

The meeting will mainly focus on the construction of the new segregation centre.

The muncipalidad of Chazuta has a terrain in mind that can be made available by the municipality. It is a 1-hectare site which is big enough to build the new centre. Mainly the muncipalidad and Cima Gordillera Azul will invest in the construction of the centre.

We at Amagreenzone want to invest in equipment such as a plastic press machine, a machine that can turn compost to speed up composting, two vehicles that can each carry 1,000 kilograms to make plastic and can collection easier and more regular. Amagreenzone will also invest in a pilot to give 500 families two bins each so that waste separation can already be started in the homes of these families. One bin for organics and one bin for recyclables. In the near future, we would like to extend this to the whole of Chazuta and surrounding villages. And  there are more causes we want to invest in.

 | The amount of waste that currently ends up in the river or in nature is huge, simply because  Peru does not control waste disposal. Traditionally, waste is put on river banks or thrown into nature. If the river water rises then the waste is gone. This way of doing things is excellent for the village people along the rivers, as they are rid of the waste. But the rainforest, villages and towns along Peru’s second-largest river of Peru that measures 1,100 km will be saddled with the waste problem.

Where Rio Huallaga stops, river Marañon begins and eventually flows into the mighty Amazon river that flows through Brazil into the Atlantic Ocean.

Unimaginable amounts of waste contaminate an unimaginable long-distance rainforest and eventually waste not left behind in the jungle will go into the ocean with all its consequences. Plastics in rivers and seas will break down into micro plastic which in turn will be eaten by the fish on which local people depend on. The consequences of this process are huge and for the good of this planet must be stopped immediately.

Your support is very important!

The people of the muncipalidad present the thoughtful budget they have made and there is a discussion on how to implement everything. Changes and adjustments are voiced by the parties and eventually a prefect plan will be on the table.

There is also a talk about the terrain, access to the area, personnel matters, materials to be bought, whether the structure of the buildings will be made of wood or metal, and all kinds of other issues related to the realisation of the centre.

One thing is certain, progress is now coming on this matter and it looks like construction of the centre can begin soon.

After talking for a while and expressing all wishes and ideas, everyone gets ready to go and have a look at the site. In collison, we all drive to the location.

For some of us, this is the first time we have seen the site. It looks great and we see the benefits right away. The access is excellent, the site is along the main road from Chazuta to Tarapoto, the site is flat and needs little work to create the centre and most importantly, it is out of sight which preserves the aesthetic of nature in the area. There are few to no neighbours and this makes the location great.

There appear to be some structures already present that have been used as plant nurseries in the past and these will come in very handy for the future centre.

A few more things will be gone through and the layout of the centre will be considered. The site will also need to be cleared of weeds and the road to the site modified so that Chazuta’s garbage truck and other vehicles can easily reach the site.

Everyone is excited, it can’t get any better than this. With this project, Chazuta is way ahead of the rest of most of Peru and how wonderful it would be if this project starts to be an example for the rest of Peru.

But we can’t do this without your help. Please consider a donation and be part of this amazing project.
